The Unseen Mind — Neuroscience

In class we learned of peas bred green or gold.
A single gene for green could be recessive.
We thought the genes for us could be so told,
One hundred genes for brain would be excessive.

In fact genomic science lets us know,
One million DNA pairs change the brain.
All DNA pairs with an influence that’s so low,
One rarely knows the changes they explain.

The neurons in our minds are in the billions,
Recording data long before we’re born,
Synapses linking neurons number trillions,
in networks rearranging every morn.

The ocean depths one day we may explore,
The mind’s abyss is deeper — fathoms more.
